Prior and Current Versions of VisualAPL

Postby joe_blaze » April 17th, 2009, 6:38 am

As of 03/2009 VisualAPL for Visual Studio 2008 was released as a consumer-ready product. As the product is adopted, customers will undoubtedly suggest enhancements and report bugs. The VisualAPL development team will address these reports from customers to release updated versions of VisualAPL for Visual Studio 2008 that will be made available on the VisualAPL Forum.

VisualAPL was initially developed using Visual Studio .Net and Visual Studio 2003 and tested by beta users in the Visual Studio 2005 environment. These prior versions of VisualAPL are not licensed by the VisualAPL product team for production use and distribution of these prior versions has ceased. The significant enhancements Microsoft has implemented in Visual Studio 2008 and the .Net Framework 3.5 provides additional basis for this policy.

The VisualAPL for Visual Studio 2008 product incorporates the enhancements identified in these pre-production versions of VisualAPL. The VisualAPL development team has ceased maintenance of the prior versions of VisualAPL and is concentrating its resources on maintaining and improving VisualAPL for Visual Studio 2008 and developing the next version, VisualAPL for Visual Studio 2010.

Microsoft’s development of the .Net versions of Visual Studio has been analogous to the development of VisualAPL. Although the prior versions of Visual Studio .Net, 2003 and 2005 may still be used by some programmers, Microsoft has ceased maintenance of these prior products and has concentrated its resources on maintaining and improving Visual Studio 2008 and developing the next version, Visual Studio 2010.

This process of product maintenance and improvement of the current product and ultimately product replacement with newer versions of the product will continue into the future. For example, at an appropriate time the VisualAPL development team will announce the availability of the VisualAPL for Visual Studio 2010 product and the ‘sunset date’ for maintenance of the prior VisualAPL for Visual Studio 2008 product. The ‘sunset date’ will be established, in consultation with product licensees and considering the associated Microsoft Visual Studio sunset dates, so as to provide sufficient time for VisualAPL programmers to adopt the newer version of the product.

I have VS 2005, but I do not want to pay Microsoft yet more money to upgrade to VS 2008. Can I still run the current versions of Visual APL on VS 2005, even if it's not in the official support list?

Pre-production versions of VisualAPL (for VS2005)

If it works for you, yes you can.

Be aware that the activation methodology used in those prior verisons has been modified (improved) in the current VisualAPL for Visual Studio 2008.

APL2000 (& APLNext) cannot provide support for those pre-Visual Studio 2008 beta versions of VisualAPL.

Paying Microsoft a continuous stream of money - what's to complain about? Bill G;s foundation puts it to good use with excellent social / health programs all over the world.
