APLNext Application Server Configuration

Postby joe_blaze » July 16th, 2015, 4:33 am

A web server running APLNext Application Server or APLNext Desktop Server contains a configuration file which describes the web services and web sites support by the software. This file uses an xml-format containing tags and values. The configuration file is maintained by an authorized server administrator using the APLNext Application Server Administration Tool included with the product.

Encryption of the Configuration File

Postby joe_blaze » July 16th, 2015, 4:37 am

The xml-format configuration file for a deployed APLNext Application Server is encrypted as a security measure so that only an authorized server administrator may modify the configuration of a running server machine. The file extension for this configuration file is '.config'.

Using the APLNext Application Server Administration tool to export a configuration to a text file will yield an unencrypted version of that server's configuration.

An encrypted configuration file may be examined by an authorized server administrator by copying that .config file to the installation folder of the APLNext Application Server software on the target machine and using the APLNext Application Server Administration tool to view its content.

Migrating to a new version of APLNext Application Server

Postby joe_blaze » July 16th, 2015, 4:41 am

The attached pdf-format document provides a step-by-step workflow for migrating from a prior to a new version of APLNext Application Server. Generally no modification of the APL+Win portion of an web service setup is required. The configuration file from the prior version of APLNext Application Server can be used with the updated version of the software.

APLNext Application Server Import/Export Configuration File

Postby joe_blaze » July 16th, 2015, 4:47 am

The attached .pdf-format document illustrates the dialogs involved when importing (or exporting) an APLNextApplicationServer configuration from (to) an xml-format file.

The document also provides an important note that when an APLNextApplicationServer configuration file is imported, it may be necessary to re-start the APLNextApplication web servers. This may be done by re-starting the machine on which the APLNextApplicationServer product has been installed or it may be done manually using the APLNext ApplicationServer Administration tool.

Obsolete 'user_state' tag in configuration file

Postby joe_blaze » July 16th, 2015, 5:30 am

Prior versions of APLNext Application Server may have created a web services xml-format configuration value for the 'user_state' tag. More recent versions of APLNext Application Server do not use this obsolete xml tag. When importing a pre-existing web services xml-format configuration file which contains a 'user_state' xml tag, a "Validation error: The element 'workspace' has invalid child element
> 'user_state'" error may be presented to the user of the APL WebServices Server Administration tool. To avoid this error, use a text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad to eliminate the obsolete 'user-state' tag in the configuration file to be imported.
